Photogrammetry's Best, Least Used Tool (part one)
Scale bars really are one of the easiest to use tools that I am yet to see discussed regularly.
This video is stacked with technical talk, so be warned.
Part two, where we will go into building scale bars, calibration and adapting your workflows around them, will be coming soon.
Note I do not go into circular targets or metashape. this is because I do not have a license for metashape.

Scanning Featureless Objects
Переглядів 29 тис.4 роки тому
This video should help people understand how to get around the limitations of photogrammetry when trying to capture featureless objects. Come join us on discord here: discord.gg/9fqzuQU Thanks to Epic Games for giving me the chance to produce these videos For more scanning related stuff, check out my social media: www.artstation.com/shrogg Assetquisition/ shrogg

I've been doing background removal, which has been mostly automatic but still a bunch of work. This looks so much better 😅
Can't wait for part 2 ! 🥳
Hello, thanks for the video! I do have a question though; if you are using camera settings that show no other light than the flash, what is the purpose of the softboxes? Just for filming this video, or do they also have a linear polarizing filter on them?
Where can I find information on how to properly set-up Geine Mini II with the camera to use it as an automatic turntable?
A quick search for common sublimating (evaporating) materials resulted in Moth Balls and Iodine, much cheaper alternatives to the expensive sprays.
Yo, do you still do photogrammetry?
Does this have a part two? I can't find it if so.
Thanks for the quick explanation I'm going to scan my kid so he can 3D Print himself.
o
Hey, where can I get the polariser for the lgiht?
What do you recommend when scanning a dark object? A white background?
yes
where is part 2 ? :)
😂 Thank you!
Hey man, absolutely insane work and great tutorial, fast and efficient. What polarizing filter are you using? I also live in New Zealand, I can't find polarizing sheet film anywhere and the Amazon sellers are dodgy at best..
you can create your own using cross polarization filter, check out dentist video on how to make diy cross polarization filter. if i send the link here yt deletes it
I like your info and presentation style. Good work.
How? what are you using?
On the point of real time. Do you think a high end modern cpu could align as fast as say 30fps in actual realtime? Even as low as 720p? I'm curious about applications in mapping terrain in realtime for 4wd'ing.
Hi Erik, I’m making a game on unreal and I’m getting inconsistent results mostly based on the dark edges and reality capture thinking that those edges are voids. Even when multiple angles show that it shouldn’t be. I also have alignment issues when I turn the object just like I would if it wasn’t shot in a void. I’m using a canon RP with a tamron 24-70mm cross polarized ring flash and circular polarizer. I use Lightroom to take out all the black and try to use contrast and black and white levels to eliminate the ring/edge of darkness furthest from flash but I get inconsistent results. Thank you for any advice you can offer!
awesome rig! what cameras are you using and how did you get them to trigger in sync?
Can't wait for this video, really want to learn more about how this is done!
I've been using a different ring flash with a polarizer I designed in cad but I noticed the flash only seems effective using the ETTL function, any reason why they could be? Manual seems to illuminate everything, even the duvytene
I searched for the part 2 to no avail...
Hmm, now I want to take my powder coating gun and fill it with talc powder or cornstarch and see if that works...
It does.
Would be amazing to see the process for this!!
what are you using for realtime capture
brilliant!
That’s great!
great video!
I don't understand this. Why isn't there just a marker that the software knows, which scale this marker have and that's always like that, so it simply scales your scene units by that marker and nothing else? When the marker is captured and in preknown by the software, why do i have to tell it what it is?
Good technique. The issue I see here is that you probably can't turn the scanned object sideways to photograph the bottom of it, cos the dust particles would probably move touching it during the proces.
hello if i want to have better 3d model quality do i need a lot of megapixels or a higher resolution ? please help me
I think you need at least a macro lens, and max megapixels and more shots. But that requires a very powerful computer
This is very interesting!!! Is part 2 coming out please?😁
I use spices of different colors, also watercolor paint where possible. I thought maybe there are other methods but oh well.
Hi Eric, thx for your videos, very informative! I have a question: how do you fix the hammer? Looks very interesting for me! thx
I’ve learned way too much.
Which Software Are you using?
What about if the object has black color? How you would change the black background?
ingenious ..... thankks! part 2? :)
Generally well done but you left out one particular solution "noise pattern projection" simply speaking you use a DLP projection and project a grainy irregular pattern or the surface you want to scan. It does not always work like with the light bulb but it works on some surfaces. I really would like to see how this method helps generating more feature points. The biggest advantage is there is no cleanup and no altering of the surface whatsoever.
Great video just subbed. Do you have any advice around using the technique in the video and applying it to a smaller object like a small coin. Any tips would be much appreciated.
You have given very precious infos that literally save life. Thanks a lot for your effort and sharing !
Thinking about texturing, are there any solution since the data set includes includes a "distorted" with powder albedo map.. Any comments there?
Hey fellow Kiwi! Great to see yah.
What is the software you use that shows your passes and cloud of your object? Thank you!
Any chance to share the scan of that ringflash battery from time 7:58? I want to 3D print dummy battery for that flash because they're not for sale anywhere. Thank you.
Great content. I would love to see the part 2 of this.
Dude.. This is really fascinating stuff! At first i was like... huuuuuuh?! I mean it makes sense what you're saying but I'm just trying to pile this info on to all the other things I need to know and do to improve..and as simple as these apriltags seem to be when I first saw being used... I had no idea how much information such an apparently simple little thing could contain! I hope you come out with your part 2 and as many other parts you care to produce sharing you knowledge and expertise. How can we go about creating these tags? Also.. I do hope the personal struggles that got in way of your creation have subsided and everything is well again! If not.. I'd encourage you to still try to create if it's something you really love. I think all if not most creators can relate on some level.. we just need to lift each other up and show our support! :)
How do you combat DOF issues? Even shooting at f/10 I get falloff on smaller objects. Are there anytimps or tricks for that? Thanks!
I've been known to put random dots on with a dry erase marker so it will easily wipe off and if they're small enough they can be easily removed from the texture in Photoshop.
so satisfying to be able to drink on the job
